About The Tribe
The Tonkawa tribe lived in Texas & Oklahoma. They were nomads, they moved with the buffalo. The buffalo was very important to them. Almost everything they had was made of buffalo. Being nomads, The Tonkawas lived in simple tepees and wickiups.
Their tepees were easy to put up and take down, it took about 30 minutes to put up their homes. Their amazing tepes were up to 24 feet high! They did not farm but they had corn because they traded it with their neighbors. Men wore breechcloths and leggings. They mostly didn’t wear shoes but on special occasions they wore moccasins. Women wore wraparound deerskin skirts. They also made and wore rabbit fur shawls. The Tonkawa had a distinct language and family. Some of the Tonkawa words are pronounced like this: Awas-n’a-n means sausage\hamburger, yaxan means food, tol-’axan is corn but there are many many more words. Their most valuable weapon was the bow an arrow, they used it at war. The Tonkawas today live on reservations and integrated into american towns and cities.
