About The Tribe
The Karankawas lived in the region that extended from Galveston Island to Corpus Christi Bay along the Gulf of Mexico. Their largest food supply came from the water and they lived near the water. They were nomads and their tepees were made of 18 willow poles and a rawhide to form a oval. There was no furniture in their tepees. When they were leaving they removed the skins from the poles and placed them in the canoes. They left the poles behind because they would be ready to use the next time they were back. No matter what the Karankawas went barefoot no matter what the weather was like. Their main weapon was the bow and arrow and they also used the tomahawk. The tomahawks were used for chopping wood and killing animals. Band of the tribe were brought together by smoke signals. Marriages were arranged by the parents. They loved their children and treated them with kindness. The boys learned to hunt with their fathers and the girls cooked with their mothers.
