About The Tribe
The Hopi lived in the southwest region in what we now call Arizona. The Hopi built adobe houses made of clay, straw and mud. They lived in pueblos, the spanish word for village. The Hopi hunted fish, bear, antelope, deer, rabbits, and squirrel. Unlike many tribes that hunted bison, the Hopi did not hunt bison, they were NOT nomadic so they traded bison meat with the Comanche. The Hopi farmed beans, squash, corn and apricots, melons, onions, peaches and wheat. Their pueblos had special storage rooms for food. The Hopi tribe were peaceful people. They believed in four worlds. The sky world, the underground world, the spirit world and the world people live in.
Kachinas are spirits. They used Kachina dolls to teach children about culture. The Hopi tribe were peaceful people. Although they didn’t like war, they did have weapons for protection. Along with working hard, the Hopi played games like field hockey, darts and shinny (a game that women play that is similar to field hockey). Now the Hopi live in native american reservations in Arizona and they are also mixed in american life.
