About The Tribe
The Cherokee lived in the Southeast region. They were the first tribe to have a written language. They lived in summer houses and winter houses, they were not nomadic. In the late 1800s, they build log cabins. The cherokee people grew corn, squash, sweet potatoes, tobacco and beans. The people of the village could eat whenever they were hungry. The tools used before the England settlers came were made from bones and sticks. Bent sticks were great for fish hooks. Cherokee hunted with blowguns, spears, darts and bow and arrows. Boys got a rock and sharpened it to make it like a arrowhead.
In 1838, the Cherokee were forced to move from their land near what is now Kentucky and Tennessee thousands of miles west to Oklahoma during what is now called the Trail of Tears. Thousands died. The Cherokee have managed to stay a strong tribe with their own goverment. Today there are around 300,000 Cherokee living in the United States.
